Introduction explains the basics of Karnatic music starting with the very meaning of the word Karnatic. Chapter on Swara Sthanas is a self learning tutorial that explains lucidly the physics behind sound the basis and mathematical derivation of the 22 sruthi points; comparison between the western and Indian scales; concepts like poorna, nyoona and pramana sruthis and finally the scientific basis for the existence of seven notes in an octave. Then the chapter Science of Ragams explains in detail all the technical terms used to describe the characteristics of different ragams. Chapter on List of Ragams is an exhaustive list of over 2500 ragams with an advanced search facility. Such a database of ragams has been presented for the first time in any form. The chapter of Melakarthas explains the concepts of parent ragas in Karnatic music and everything related to their study. Ragalakshnas (Characteristics of ragams) is a chapter which is the main stay of the entire project. Characteristics of about 400 ragams are presented in the format of a text book with the ascending and descending scales sung for all of them. For about 170 ragas, alapanas (improvisations) with swaram notation are given. Over 150 compositions are presented as vocal renderings to exemplify these ragas. A chapter Compositions lists all these renderings with easy access to play and listen to them. There are chapters where the learner is exposed to the nuances of music in the form of Quizzes and interactive Games. In addition many other features such as a playable music key board are included. The package is complete in all respects and sufficient thought has been given to include all aspects of ragams of Karnatic music.
